Hydration and energy are more connected than most people realise. If you’re struggling with brain fog, low motivation, poor focus or constant cravings, dehydration could be playing a bigger role than you think. This blog explores how hydration affects your energy, cravings and focus — and how to support it without rigid rules or tracking apps.
Why Hydration is the Missing Piece in Your Energy, Cravings & Focus
Making sure we drink enough is important to everyone, but hydration is often a forgotten part of nutrition. Many people go hours without drinking, simply because they forget or don’t notice the cues, and this can leave them feeling low in energy, lacking focus and struggling with cravings.
This blog runs through why hydration matters and how we can support it in simple, realistic ways.
Why do we need to drink regularly?
Water is essential to life.
60-70% of your body is made of water and it plays a role in almost every bodily system, such as:
- Temperature regulation
- Digestion
- Healthy skin
- Healthy blood pressure
- Transporting nutrients and oxygen
- Removal of waste
- Breathing
- Lubricant and shock absorber in joints
- Brain function
So drinking enough water each day is important to both short and long term health.
There are several medical conditions that have been shown to be impacted with regular dehydration such as constipation , kidney stones, urinary tract infections and consistent mild dehydration can lead to chronic kidney disease over time.
What happens when you don’t drink enough?
When we don’t drink enough, the body simply can’t function as efficiently, and symptoms can appear surprisingly quickly. These may include:
Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Poor concentration
- Difficulty making decisions
- Reduced motivation
- Mood changes
- Anxiety
- Slower reaction time
This makes sense when we consider just how reliant the brain is on adequate hydration.
Why do we need to be hydrated for brain function?
A large proportion of your brain is made of water and relies on it for the complex chemical and electrical processes happening constantly in the background.
Cognitive functions include concentration, learning, critical thinking and memory.
Research shows that even mild dehydration – a body water loss of just 1–2% – can impair these abilities.
It’s easy to see how focus can slip when we’re not drinking enough through the day. This is relevant for everyone, but may be particularly impactful for those who already struggle with focus, such as people with ADHD. Dehydration can exacerbate symptoms like inattention, brain fog and fatigue.
Adequate hydration supports brain function and neurotransmitter balance, while dehydration is associated with increased irritability, reduced mental clarity and poorer cognitive performance, potentially worsening executive dysfunction.
Why do we feel we have no energy when we are dehydrated?
Feeling tired when you’re dehydrated is a physiological response.
Water plays a key role in how your body produces and uses energy. When fluid levels drop, blood volume reduces slightly, meaning the heart has to work harder to circulate oxygen and nutrients around the body. With less oxygen reaching your muscles and brain, fatigue, heaviness and low physical stamina can follow.
Hydration is also essential for energy production at a cellular level. Every cell relies on water to carry out metabolic reactions, including those that convert carbohydrates, fats and protein into usable energy. When you’re dehydrated, these processes become less efficient, so even if you’re eating well, your body may struggle to access that energy effectively.
Electrolyte balance also plays a role. Water helps maintain key minerals such as sodium and potassium, which are essential for nerve signalling and muscle contraction. When hydration is low, this balance can be disrupted, contributing to weakness, headaches, reduced motivation and that “washed‑out” feeling many people describe.
Dehydration can also increase perceived effort. Tasks may feel more draining than usual, focus may dip and simple decisions can feel harder. This often leads people to assume they “need sugar”, caffeine or more food, when in reality the body is signalling a need for fluids.
In short, low energy during dehydration is the body struggling to meet demands without adequate water.
Why do I have cravings when I am dehydrated?
Dehydration can influence stress responses. A recent study showed individuals who drank less than 1.5 litres of fluid per day had a cortisol response to stress that was over 50% higher than those who met daily water intake recommendations. Although this doesn’t determine if cortisol was outside of normal ranges, it does indicate there may be a link to hydration and the bodies response to stress, probably due to the shared pathways that connect water regulation and cortisol release. Exaggerated cortisol reactivity to stress is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and depression, so being hydrated may help your body manage stress more effectively. Elevated cortisol is associated with stronger appetite signals and a greater drive for highly palatable foods, especially under stress.
When dehydration contributes to fatigue and mental strain, the brain often looks for fast relief. This can show up as cravings for sugar, caffeine or snack foods rather than addressing the slower but essential fix of hydration.
There is also a mechanical aspect of digestion to consider. Water is needed to help food move through the digestive system and for nutrients to be properly absorbed. When hydration is low, digestion can feel sluggish or uncomfortable, creating confusing physical sensations that people may respond to by eating — again mistaking thirst or discomfort for hunger.
Importantly, dehydration‑related cravings often persist even after eating, because the underlying need hasn’t been addressed. This can leave people feeling frustrated or blaming themselves, when a drink or a hydrating pause may have been just as important.
Supporting hydration through the day may reduce cravings, smooth out energy dips and make it easier to recognise what your body is actually asking for — whether that’s food, fluids, rest or a pause.
A note on hunger
This is not advice to ignore hunger by drinking water, or to try to manage hunger with fluids alone. If you are genuinely hungry, your body needs food and you should eat.
What is helpful is recognising that thirst and hunger can feel similar at times. Checking in with when you last ate and drank can help you respond more accurately to your body’s signals, without restriction or second‑guessing.
Why “just drink more water” doesn’t work
Most people already know they should drink more water. The problem isn’t a lack of information – it’s that “just drink more” is vague, impractical, and doesn’t account for how real life actually works.
It assumes that people:
- Remember to drink
- Accurately notice thirst cues
- Have water easily available
- Can override busy schedules, stress, forgetfulness or poor interoceptive awareness
For many people, especially those juggling work, caring responsibilities, stress, or neurodivergence, these assumptions simply don’t hold true.
Instead of aiming for perfect hydration, it’s far more effective to think about systems and habits.
Habit stacking over perfection
Habit stacking means linking hydration to things you already do regularly, rather than relying on reminders or willpower.
For example:
- Drinking a glass of water when you wake up
- Having water alongside meals and snacks
- Drinking before your first cup of tea or coffee (hydrate before you caffeinate)
- Having a drink when you sit down at your desk or finish meetins
- Pairing a drink with medication or supplements
Drinking fluids with meals can also support hydration, as food components such as protein, fats, vitamins and minerals can help with fluid absorption and retention compared with drinking on an empty stomach.
These habits work because they remove the need to “remember”. The behaviour becomes anchored to existing routines, which makes it far more sustainable.
Purposeful hydration supports blood volume, brain function, digestion and energy before symptoms like fatigue or cravings appear, rather than trying to play catch‑up later.
The aim isn’t constant tracking or forcing fluids. It’s gentle structure that supports the body without ongoing mental effort.
A simple takeaway hydration framework
If hydration has felt confusing, inconsistent, or hard to prioritise, this framework keeps things practical and flexible. You don’t need targets, apps, or constant tracking – just a few reliable anchors.
Start your day hydrated
After sleep, the body is naturally a little dehydrated. Starting the day with fluids helps support circulation, brain function, digestion and energy before the day’s demands build up.
This isn’t about doing anything perfectly — simply recognising that hydration early in the day can set a steadier foundation.
Drink around meals
Meals offer a natural opportunity to remember fluids. Drinking around meals can support digestion, nutrient absorption and appetite regulation, while also helping hydration spread more evenly across the day.
Using existing routines removes the pressure to remember or monitor intake constantly.
Build repeatable cues
Rather than aiming to “drink enough”, focusing on repeatable cues- moments in your day that consistently prompt drinking- can make hydration feel more achievable and less effortful.
When drinking becomes something that fits into your rhythm, rather than another task to manage, it’s more likely to stick.
Hydration works best when it’s part of your normal routine, not another thing to be “good at”. Small, consistent actions add up, and many people notice steadier energy, fewer cravings and better focus simply by making fluids easier and more intentional.
